Iran’s role in Afghanistan
A spokesman for the president of Afghanistan recently made a veiled accusation against Pakistan. He said Pakistan’s intelligence agency was behind the suicide bombing in Kabul. That bombing killed more than 40 people. Afghans often feel their country is a chessboard for Pakistan and other regional powers. And now one of those powers, Iran, is worrying the Bush administration.
The Iranian government has programs to help poor Afghans, and says it wants to help Afghanistan develop. But the US government says Iran is also trying to increase its influence in Afghanistan, and supplying weapons to the Taliban.
