Congress holds the first hearing today into the Internal Revenue Service targeting of conservative groups for unwarranted scrutiny. Over a series of hearings, the House Ways and Means Committee will question current and former officials about the screening of applications for tax-exempt status.
I.R.S. acting commissioner Steven T. Miller told the Committee, “first and foremost, as acting Commissioner, I want to apologize on behalf of the Internal Revenue Service for the mistakes that we made and the poor service we provided. The affected organizations and the American public deserve better. Partisanship or even the perception of partisanship has no place in the IRS.” Miller was forced by President Obama to resign earlier this week.
