Anchor Lisa Mullins talks to The World’s Carol Hills about her latest slideshow, a collection of cartoons about Julius Malema.
In 2011, Malema was sent into South Africa’s political wilderness after he was fired from his job as African National Congress Youth Leader.
But the South African police killings of 34 striking miners have propelled Malema back into the political fray, stoking striking miners’ anger and further antagonizing his former boss, South African President Jacob Zuma.
Cartoon caricatures show Malema depicted as an opportunist blowing his own horn; a superhero named “Opportunist Man”; and a Nazi-looking figure announcing “Mine Kumback.”
At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.
Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
