The arrest of high profile people is just a tiny story, the main story is about ordinary Zimbabweans and no one knows where they are or how long they’re held for. We were trying to find a prominent human rights lawyer who had been detained over the weekend and in that process we found many others who were detained, no charges, no nothing, who had been in custody for a long period than allowed by law. If we weren’t looking for this lawyer, no one would’ve found out. (Who’s doing the apprehending?) the lucky ones are the ones who end up in court. But the police and army are responsible for the apprehending. When the security agents take you, you don’t know where you’re going. With the police you might eventually end up in a court of law. Sometimes these apprehensions are being done without any oversight from the government. (Has this gotten worse since the elections in March?) This has gone beyond anyone’s imagination, even those who support the government. The fear is that until the election monitors arrive, it will continue escalating. (Does this get you in trouble?) Yes it does, I’ve been apprehended multiple times and a number of lawyers like me have gone into hiding.
