Veterans Day is celebrated in other parts of the world as Armistice Day and it falls on the anniversary of the signing of the truce that ended the fighting on the Western Front to end World War I. WWI lasted four years and redrew the map of Europe and some 20 million died in the conflict. One of the biggest commemorations is in northern France where the war’s long battle was conducted. French President Sarkozy said he’ll never forget his people’s contribution to freedom. Sarkozy spoke of the enormity of the suffering of people during the First World War. The 90th anniversary of the conflict will likely be the last one to involve any remaining living soldiers from that conflict.
