Special assignment in Haiti

Until December 2009, Haitian journalist Michele Montas was on call 24/7 for U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon. When she retired from her post as his spokesperson to Port-au-Prince, she vowed to do “three months of nothing”. However, that was before an earthquake destroyed her home city.

On a flying visit to survey the damage this weekend the secretary-general asked his former spokeswoman to come out of retirement and help the U.N. rebuild Haiti. Michele Montas accepted the challenge. In the middle of trying to piece together her post-quake life she is working with the U.N.’s stabilization mission in Haiti also known as MINUSTAH. Communicating with Haiti is not easy. Michele shares her unique insight as a Haitian journalist into what life has been like over the past week in Haiti and what needs to be done.
