(What practically changed on Wednesday in terms of how Sark will be governed?) We now have 28 people all voted in by the public. (Was there a sense that it was a feudal state.) Oh a bit. The senior still retains his role in government but he loses his automatic right to vote. There is no law for keeping animals and pets, so it’s safe for everyone. (Were there supporters of feudalism?) There was and there probably still is because this has been the life for 550 people here, some were happy to not have human rights and people felt Sark ran well in its own way. But we realized a lot of our old ways had to go.
At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.
Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
