In December 2007, A.J. Larson, 20, was behind the wheel of his car, texting his girlfriend, when he accidentally drove through a stop sign and was struck by a garbage truck. Larson was killed in the accident. Larson’s mother, Kelly Cline, has been working to get a law passed in New York State to outlaw texting while driving. Kline has formed a group called Families Against Texting While Driving, which has over a thousand supporters in New York. We talk with Cline about her efforts and the seriousness of electronic distractions for drivers.
At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.
Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
