Prices of oil, rice, wheat and coffee have spiked in recent months; but they aren’t the only commodities in greater demand. So is used cooking grease. In 2006, food grease disposed of by restaurants went for 11 to 13 cents a pound.
Now, it goes for 33 cents a pound. Grease renderers say that as the price of grease rises on the market, levels of grease theft are skyrocketing. The Takeaway gets the story from Chris Griffin, Director of Legal Affairs for Griffin Industries, an agro-business that recycles used oil and animal byproducts.
