Geo Quiz and Geo answer

The World
The World

Today’s Geo Quiz is for those of our listeners spending Christmas in cold, Northern climes. We’re taking you south. To where the sun shines and the skies are blue just about every day. On second thought…

The sand is white, the water clear and turquoise. You get the idea. We’re at a resort called Port Morgan, where there’s windsurfing, beach volleyball and snorkeling. It’s the most popular tourist destination in the country, according to its Minister of Tourism.

But what country is that? It can be hard to figure out. Even the map on the resort’s website mentions neighboring countries, but not this one.

It does show that Port Morgan is on Ile a Vache, or Cow Island, a small Caribbean island off the western half of Hispaniola.

The very absence of this country’s name is telling. It is a place largely known for political upheaval and extreme poverty. Port Morgan is not the only resort to downplay the fact that it is technically located in this nation.

And we’re just about out of time. If you’re still stumped, think Papa Doc… Baby Doc… Tontons Macoutes…

Then again, don’t. Think fresh shellfish on the beach, gingerbread bungalows, and soothing music.

And Haiti is the answer to today’s Geo Quiz.
