NPR’s David Welna reports on the firing of Brazil’s outspoken environmental minister, Jose Lutzenberger. Lutzenberger had been highly critical of some policies of his boss, conservative President Fernando Collor, but had also been criticized by environmentalists for being disorganized. As the host of the upcoming Earth Summit, Brazil has been trying to polish up its environmental image.
