Sergio de la Pava says that in this novel he was trying to be one hundred percent accurate in the parts that relate to the criminal justice system. He explains that he wanted to remove "the superficial fictionalization that most people are given when they watch something like Law and Order or anything like that."
De la Pava self-published a 'A Naked Singularity" in 2008 after literary agents repeatedly rejected his manuscript. Eventually the novel got enough positive reviews that The University of Chicago Press picked it up and re-published it in 2012. A year later the novel was awarded the PEN/Robert W Bingham prize for debut fiction.
