Emanuela Pistone is a theater actress and director based in Catania, Sicily’s second-largest city, where in 2013 she founded the Liquid Company, a unique theater troupe in Italy composed of young migrants, refugees, asylum seekers and unaccompanied minors, all united by one common feature: having crossed the Mediterranean to reach for a dignified life.
This year, with a record high 68.5 million forcibly displaced people worldwide, the United States is on track to take in about 22,000 refugees, a quarter the number admitted in 2016, the last year of Barack Obama’s presidency, and the fewest in four decades.
