Bahrain’s majority Shiites staged street protests last year seeking a greater political voice. Abdulhadi al-Khawaja was one of those protesters. He was jailed for life for his participation. Al-Khawaja has been on a hunger strike ever since.
This is the first anniversary if anti-government protests that rocked the tiny Gulf kingdom last February. Tuesday, the government deployed troops to prevent any gatherings marking the anniversary.
