Turkey plans ‘new initiative’ after UN’s Syria ‘fiasco’

Turkey is reportedly preparting a new initiative with countries who oppose the Syria in response to its bloody crackdown on unrest in response to the "fiasco" of Russia blocking a United Nations resolution against Syria.

"We are going to start a new initiative with those countries that stand by the people, not the Syrian government," Reuters cited Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Tuesday at a meeting of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) in Ankara.

"The process that occurred at the United Nations in relation to Syria is a fiasco for the civilized world," Reuters reported, citing Turkish media.

According to Bloomberg, Erdogan said the Chinese and Russian vetoes of an Arab-backed Security Council resolution seeking to condemn the regime of Bashar al-Assad regime gave the Syrian government a "license to kill."

Assad broke all promises of reform and is following the steps of his father down a “dead-end street,” Erdogan said in televised comments.

"We cannot remain silent on what is happening in Syria and we cannot turn our backs on the Syrian people,” he added, according to Britain's Telegraph website.

While detail was scant on the measures Turkey might propose, Erdogan said Ankara was using "all diplomatic channels" to ensure the international community was behind them.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu was due to fly to Washington Wednesday for further talks on Syria with Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State.

US officials have reportedly said they are also testing the waters with a group of like-minded countries on a move that could bypass Russian and Chinese resistance to anti-Assad action.
