Sudan News: Turabi predicts revolt against President Bashir
Sudan’s Islamist opposition leader Hassan al-Turabi addresses the media in Khartoum following his release on January 5, 2012 after more than three months in jail. The veteran politician, who was arrested in January shortly after warning of a Tunisia-style uprising, was defiant following his release, saying he was never investigated or charged, and again calling for a revolution in Sudan ‘against corruption.’
NAIROBI, Kenya — Predictions are a mug's game but this one, from veteran Sudanese politician-cum-troublemaker Hassan al-Turabi, might be on the money.
This Reuters article quotes the predictions of the Islamist head of the opposition Popular Congress Party:
"I expect the Sudanese people to stage a revolution and I think this will happen very soon," said Turabi. …
"I hope it will be a peaceful revolution so we can get a real multi-party parliamentary system," he told reporters.
President Omar al-Bashir is facing an increasingly coordinated armed rebellion along the southern border and is president over a faltering economy and an increasingly restive population in Khartoum.
His time may be coming.
