Police have been searching for Robert Dewey Hoskins since he walked away from the Metropolitan State Hospital in the LA suburb of Norwalk on February 3.

In a statement, Los Angeles police said:

"Hoskins is highly psychotic when not taking his medication and has very violent tendencies … The public is being warned to notify police immediately if he is found, and to not engage him on their own."

In 1996, a court sentenced Hoskins to 10 years in prison for stalking Madonna, who he once threatened to stab with a knife.

CNN affiliate KCAL reported that Hoskins had threatened to cut her from "ear to ear" if she did not marry him.

At Hoskins' trial, Madonna – who performed the halftime show at this year's Super Bowl – testified that she had nightmares after seeing him scale the perimeter wall of her home in the Hollywood Hills area of Los Angeles, the BBC reported.

Hoskins was shot twice by a security guard, before being detained.
