One dead after couch-surfing stunt goes wrong in Quebec

A young man is dead and another has been charged after a late-night road stunt went terribly wrong in St. Benjamin, Quebec, reported Canadian newspaper The Globe and Mail.

According to Sûreté du Québec spokeswoman Genevieve Bruneau, a group of young people decided to hook a sled and a couch to the back of a van along a rural road in St. Benjamin, about 325 kilometers (just over 200 miles) east of Montreal. As they was speeding down the road, another vehicle approached from the other direction and was unable to stop before hitting the couch, which had swerved into the oncoming lane, reported Canadian newspaper the National Post.

The accident killed 22-year-old François Hallée, who was riding on the couch at the time of the collision, according to the Globe. Two other young men who were riding on the sled were not injured, reported the Post.

The 21-year-old driver of the van, Alex Labbe, allegedly fled the scene after the impact, but was tracked down by police shortly after, according to the Post. The Globe also reported that Labbe has now been charged with hit and run causing death, dangerous driving causing death, and criminal negligence causing death.
