Nike Galaxy causes riot (VIDEO)

Nike was set to release its newest shoe, the Nike Foamposite Galaxy, when Thursday's clocks rolled over to midnight, but a riot broke out in Florida and arrests were made in Maryland and Louisiana when it was announced the shoe would not be sold on Friday, according to the Associated Press.

In Orlando, local paper the Orlando Sentinel reported that about 100 officers from the sheriff's office, Orlando police department and Florida Highway Patrol were on hand around midnight because of gathering crowds of people wanting to buy the Nike Foamposite Galaxy at Florida Mall.

"It was complete havoc," said GabyLlanos, 23, to the AP. "People were running and hiding in trees so the police wouldn't find them."

In Hyattsville, Maryland, one person was arrested and more than 200 were still gathered outside The Mall at Prince George’s when the announcement was made that the Nike Foamposite Galaxy would not go on sale that night, according to The Washington Post.

The outer-space themed basketball shoe was to sell for $220, reported USA Today. One possible reason for the increased demand for the Nike Foamposite Galaxy shoe was Nike's decision not to sell it online.

According to the AP, people who managed to get their hands on a pair of the coveted basketball shoes immediately posted them on eBay for as much as $1,000. ABC News is now reporting the Nike Foamposite Galaxy shoe is getting bids as high as $2,500.
