Nicki Minaj looks like a fool, Catholic League says

Recording artist Nicki Minaj brought a fake pope as her date to the 2012 Grammy awards Sunday, rap-confessed to a priest during her live performance of "Roman Holiday" and then appeared to undergo an exorcism. Catholics are not pleased.

The Catholic League, which describes itself as the nation's largest Catholic civil rights organization in the United States, released a statement Monday titled, "Is Nicki Minaj Possessed?" 

Beyond complaining that the performance was religiously offensive, Catholic League president Bill Donohue also mocked Minaj as an entertainer, saying that she was "fresh off looking like a fool with Madonna at the Super Bowl." Donahue left open the possibility that Minaj may really be possessed  (it's "an open question").

Donohue ultimately blamed the Recording Academy for allowing Minaj to use Catholic themes in her Grammy performance. 

The statement appears to end on a political threat. Donohue said that "it’s bad enough that Catholics have to fight for their rights vis-à-vis a hostile administration in Washington,"  but added that "the net effect, however, will only embolden Catholics, as well as their friends in other faith communities."

Last week, Donohue went on Fox News to discuss his objections to President Barack Obama's compromise on contraceptive care for women who work at Catholic institutions. "Are we now to be told, that some gal comes to work for me…later she says to me, 'Bill, I want abortion-inducing drugs,' and I'm told by the Obama people that you can go to Christian Brothers, another Catholic group, and they're going to give you free abortion-inducing drugs?" Donohue asked.
