Detroit citizens ignore elderly carjacking victim (VIDEO)
Surveillance video shows the carjacking victim crawling for help.
An 86-year-old World War II Air Corps veteran said no one came to his aid after a thief pushed him to the ground and stole his car at a busy Detroit gas station this week, the Associated Press reported. Surveillance video of the scene, first obtained by the Detroit Free Press, shows people ignoring Aaron Brantley as he crawled from the fuel pump to the gas station after the attack. Brantley had to crawl because his leg had been broken.
“People were walking past by me like I wasn't there," he told the Detroit Free Press. "I said, 'Lord, have mercy.' I said, 'Lord, some of them didn't even look around, just going to get their gas.' "
Once Brantley reached the gas station, the attendant, Haissam Jaber, 37, called for help, the Detroit Free Press reported.
"I couldn't believe it happened at 10 o'clock in the morning," Jaber, who didn’t see the attack, told the Detroit Free Press. "And he actually pushed him down. It was a bad scene. He must be on drugs or something – to push an old guy like this is sad. They do anything these days."
Brantley’s car was found abandoned soon afterwards – without wheels or its radio – but Detroit Police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens told the AP on Saturday that there have been no arrests in the case. The carjacker left Brantley’s Bible on the front seat, however.
