Sanjiv Bhatt, a senior IPS officer in Gujarat, who recently accused Chief Minister Narendra Modi of instructing police not to act to stop Hindu-Muslim riots in 2002, has appealed to the Supreme Court seeking protection, NDTV reports.

Bhatt, who was posted in the Intelligence Department when the worst religious riots since India split from Pakistan killed 1200 people across Gujarat, earlier submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court claiming that at a meeting on February 27, 2002 Modi asked police officers to be "indifferent" to rioters and to the calls for help from areas under attack.
