Turkish troops killed in roadside attack

Seven Turkish soldiers were killed and up to 11 others injured on Wednesday in an attack blamed on Kurdish militants in the country's south-east.

Government officials said the Kurdistan Workers Party, or PKK, laid roadside bombs in the Hakkari province, close to the Iraqi border, blowing up the troops' vehicle.

Military reinforcements were reportedly being deployed to the district of Cukurca.

The attack marks one of the deadliest days for the Turkish army since violence escalated in July, according to the Wall Street Journal.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

Initial reports said the Turkish troops had been ambushed by militants, but the office of Hakkari's governor said four land mines had been laid.
