Peter Englund, secretary of the Royal Swedish Academy, announces that Swedish poet Tomas Transtromer is the winner of the 2011 Nobel Prize of literature on October 6, 2011, in front of journalists in Stockholm.
Tomas Transtromer, a Swedish poet, won the Nobel literature prize Thursday.
Transtromer is known for his works on the mysteries of the human mind and has been considered one of the most important Scandinavian writers since World War II, the Associated Press reports.
The Swedish Academy gave the award to the 80-year-old poet "because, through his condensed, translucent images, he gives us fresh access to reality."
