Austrian police have found the remains of a man they believe went missing in the Alps 54 years ago.

Police located the partial skeleton on Thursday after a climber gave them human bones and a hiking boot that he found near a glacier.

They say the find was made in the Tyrollean Alps at a height of 2500 meters, Associated Press reports.

Police believe the man is most likely a climber from the town of Matrei, close to the foot of the peaks and near the border with Italy.

He was reported missing while hiking 54 years ago.

His name has not been released publicly.
