Footage of a man who accidentally shot himself in the leg when he attempted to draw his gun has made him world famous.

Derek "Tex" Grebner was at his local shooting range when he took out his .45 caliber pistol and inadvertently shot a round into his thigh and down his leg.

The footage, which he uploaded to YouTube shows him staggering around saying "Son of a b****, I just shot myself".

In the video, the gun enthusiast explains that the accident had happened after he had been practicing "how to draw and fire from defensive retention."

He explains in the video that the accident occurred because the thumb drive holster for his .45 caliber pistol differed from the one for his Glock, Business Insider reports.

He says he posted the video to stop others making the same mistake.

"I'm not making this video for sympathy or to be ridiculed," he says.

Grebner, who describes himself on his YouTube channel as "a pretty unprofessional outdoors show host and an unbiased online gear reviewer," Grebner was able to stop the bleeding before the paramedics arrived.

"Things just tend to happen," he says. "I just hope that they never happen to me again and I hope that they never happen to you."

"Negligent discharges happen," Grebner says, "and I don't want them to happen to anybody else. Gun safety is everybody's business."

Despite the incident, he encouraged his viewers at the end of the video to join the National Rifle Association "to protect our rights."
