A bull gored a Spanish matador, ripping apart the man’s face as he tore through his jaw and gouged out his eyeball in front of an audience on Oct. 7, reports the New York Daily News.

The bull chased Juan Jose Padilla, 39, through the ring and pinned him to the ground after he tripped during the televised performance.

"I can't see, I can't see anything," Padilla shouted as he was rushed out of the ring while bleeding profusely and cupping his protruding eye, reports the Daily News.

Padilla was rushed to an emergency facility at the Misericordia bullring before he was taken to the hospital, reports the Daily News. He then underwent a life-saving five-hour operation to repair severe damage to his eye, bone, muscle and skin, reports the Daily Mail. His doctor, Antonio Val-Carreres kept Padilla over night in serious condition.

Padilla suffered eye, bone, muscle and skin damage and surgeons were unable to repair a severed facial nerve, the Daily News reports. Surgeons used titanium plates and mesh to reconstruct parts of his face.

The 1,120-pound bull, named Marques, was the second beast to take on the bullfighter at the annual Virgen del Pilar festivities in Zargoza.
