Woman stuck in Berlin gay pride traffic gives birth in police car

A German woman gave birth in the back of a police car over the weekend after she was unable to get to a hospital because of Berlin's gay pride parade.

NewsCore says that the woman went into labor during the annual Christopher Street Day parade, reportedly sending her husband into a panic.

"My wife is having a baby but I can't get through the street blockades," he is quoted as telling two police officers.

Germany's The Local says that the policemen ushered the couple into their patrol car and called an ambulance.   However, the woman's waters broke and the delivery began almost immediately, the news website says.

“I could tell that the birth was going to happen soon,” officer Mario Stöcklein told the German-language Tagesspiegel newspaper.  "Somehow I knew what I had to do."

The Daily Telegraph explains that Stöcklein drew on first aid training he received about 25 years ago and successfully delivered baby Yaren Yakut in the car.

The mother and child were eventually taken to hospital where doctors declared them both healthy, says the Herald Sun.
