William Asher, director of ‘I Love Lucy’ and ‘Bewitched,’ dies aged 90

William Asher, the director of “I love Lucy”, “Bewitched” and "Gidget," has died. He was 90.

The Emmy award-winning director died Monday of complications from Alzheimer’s disease at a facility in Palm Desert, California, his wife Meredith told the Associated Press.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Asher is best known for directing 100 episodes of the 1950s sitcom “I love Lucy”, which starred Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

Asher also directed episodes of other television series including “Bewitched”, the 1964-72 series starring his then-wife Elizabeth Montgomery. He was nominated for four Emmys for directing and producing “Bewitched,” and he won once for directing the show.

Other series include “Gidget,” which brought Sally Field to the TV screen, “The Thin Man,” “Willy,” “The Dinah Store Show,” and “The Jimmy Durante Show,” according to the Hollywood Reporter.

The Desert Sun reported that Asher retired from television and film in 1991.

A memorial service would be held for Asher on September 29.

Asher is survived by his wife Meredith, his daughters Liane Sears and Rebecca Asher, and his sons Brian, Bill, Robert and John.
