Video of the Day: Dennis Rodman and the Harlem Globetrotters do North Korea

For years, journalists and US government officials alike have been trying to get a closer look at life inside the Hermit Kingdom.

Since 2009, GlobalPost's very own Senior Correspondent, Geoffrey Cain, has been on the list of one North Korea-based institution for two planned visits: first, a reporting tour that was just too sensitive to materialize, and second, an academic lecture circuit at a North Korean university — which has yet to be given the green light.

However, if you throw in a huge ex-Chicago Bulls NBA hall of famer, suddenly the regime is interested. That really says a lot about how the government of North Korea thinks: that if your sport is beloved by the leadership, and could add shine to your poor world image, then yes, you're welcome in this country.

Why didn't we think of that? Anyway, we digress.

As one can imagine, when the news broke that the nose-studded, basketball playing "worm," Dennis Rodman was going to be getting drunk with Kim Jong Un embarking upon a Good Will Ambassador trip to North Korea, our jealous-journalist hearts couldn't help but go aflutter just thinking of all the weird news possibilities that would be born from this adventure.

And while there have certainly been more than a few colorful stories that have come from D-Rod's trip, the video below, which features Dennis Rodman and his best bro Kim Jong Un attending a Harlem Globetrotters game together, has quickly become one of our favorites.

Why do we love it so much, you ask?

Well, unlike Lil' Kim's hallmark hairstyle, the answer to that question is not so clean cut. 

Perhaps it's the juxtaposition of the dark, dour suits in the stands with the frivolity of the Harlem Globetrotters that make this video so memorable.

Maybe its the palpable bromance between Kim Jong Un and D-Rod that warms our otherwise stone cold hearts.

Or perhaps its mixture of Rodman's day-glo pink kerchief/tie and the video's background music (which was arguably ripped from an early 90's Saturday morning cartoon) that stole our hearts.

In any case, this 14-minute long video [READ: an eternity in internet time] is certainly worth the watch, if for no other reason than its gives us a rare look into life in North Korea.
