Vatican blames the media, devil for leaked document scandal

The Vatican accused the media Monday of whipping up a scandal over leaked documents.
The Vatican's number two official, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, said an in interview that the media has created a scandal over secret documents that have been said to contain details about corruption and power struggles within the Holy See.
"Many journalists are playing the game of trying to imitate Dan Brown," said Bertone, according to Reuters.
"They (journalists) continue to invent fairytales and repeat legends."
The Associated Press reported that the scandal began earlier in the year when sensitive documents began leaking to Italian media sources.

They suggest corruption within the Vatican, including shading dealings with Italian companies, as well as power struggles within the Catholic Church, reported Foreign Policy.
The documents were later found to be in the possession of Pope Benedict's butler who was arrested in May.
During the interview, the cardinal even suggested that the devil might be involved in the media feeding frenzy.
"The truth is that there is an attempt to sow division that comes from the devil," Berton said, reported Reuters.
The interview with Bertone appeared in the the Italian Catholic magazine Famiglia Cristiana.
