UPDATE: Scientology to blame in Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorce (VIDEO)

Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes announced they are getting a divorce after five years of marriage.

TMZ reported that Holmes' attorney, Jonathan Wolfe, released a statement saying, "This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family. Katie's primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter's best interest."

Sources close to the couple told TMZ that Scientology is at the heart of the couple's split.

"Katie has never been fully committed to Scientology, even though she has had ties with the church," wrote TMZ.

TMZ reported that Holmes was growing weary of her daughter Suri's involvement in the church, as she is "now of the age where Scientology becomes a significant part of her life."

In divorce papers filed on Thursday in New York, the actress, 33, is seeking "primary residential custody" of their 6-year-old daughter, Suri, People.com reported.

Though many religions offer practices and rituals for dealing with divorce, Scientology does not, ABC News reported

"Church members believe that tension in a marriage comes from 'overts' and 'withholds,' unstated, undiscussed issues or problems," Stephen Kent, a religion professor at the University of Alberta, told ABC. "There's no real annulment in the church. Many members have been divorced, even founder L. Ron Hubbard was married three times."

A representative for Cruise issued a statement confirming that Holmes had filed for divorce and saying the "Rock of Ages" star is "deeply saddened," according to People.com.

Cruise, 49, and Holmes were married five years ago in an Italian castle after a whirlwind romance in front of paparazzi cameras.

This is Holmes first marriage, and second for Cruise, who was previously married to actress Nicole Kidman.
