A fugitive accused of killing a Tennessee mother and daughter before kidnapping her two other children killed himself Thursday night as authorities closed in. The girls were safely recovered.
Adam Mayes, 35, shot himself in the head after a SWAT team, acting on a tip, found him and the girls near New Albany, Miss., Guntown Police Chief Michael Hall told The Associated Press.

When investigators came upon Mayes, "the girls were on their stomach face-down. They were close enough to see what was going on when he killed himself," FBI spokesman Jason Pack told CNN.
Afterward, the girls were tended to by two female agents, who rode with them in an ambulance to a hospital.
The girls, 12-year-old Alexandria Bain and her 8-year-old sister, Kyliyah, were released from the hospital on Friday, Reuters reported.
Meanwhile, three more people were arrested in connection with the killings of the girls' mother, Jo Ann Bain, 31, and their sister, 14-year-old Adrienne. One person was arrested for making a false statement and two others for illegal possession of a firearm, CNN reported.
Mayes was described as a friend of the Bain family, but authorities said the relationship went wrong when the Bains announced a plan to move to Arizona. The husband reported his wife and three girls missing on April 27 when Mayes was helping them move.
Authorities said Mayes killed Jo Ann Bain and Adrienne at their home that day and took the two younger girls with him, according to Reuters.
Mayes' wife, Teresa, and mother were arrested Sunday and detained in Hardeman County Jail pending a preliminary hearing May 22.
Adam Mayes' mother-in-law told HLN's Nancy Grace that he may have believed he was the father of the two girls he was accused of abducting.
"He believes they are his children," Josie Tate said.
