South Africa: Decio Lourenco to be prosecuted for skateboarding over the speed limit (VIDEO)

Decio Lourenco, a 24-year-old graphic design student, will be prosecuted for reckless and negligent road behavior after skateboarding over the speed limit in Cape Town, South African safety officials said this week.

On Jan. 20, Lourenco tripped the camera set up to catch those speeding above 37 mph on the steep Kloof Nek road in Tamboerskloof. Lourenco and his skateboard flew past the camera 68 mph, News 24 reported.

The daredevil was well aware of his speed. He wore a GPS sensor on his ankle to measure it, and his escapade was filmed by a friend following in a car with a camera attached to the bumper, the Telegraph reported.

The video they posted on YouTube, "Spoofing the Cam-Kloof Nek,” had gotten about 500,000 views by Friday morning.

Cape Town’s bylaws ban skateboarding on public roads unless they have been specifically designated for that purpose, according to News 24.

"All that was needed was for one of those motorists to panic and swerve into the oncoming traffic, and you have a large number of deaths, as we have already had on that road," Jean-Pierre Smith, Cape Town's safety and security spokesman, told the Telegraph. "If we don't take action against him, every other aspirant skateboarder will try it, and one of them will come to a sticky end.”

"I accept that it's dangerous but so is stepping out of my front door," Lourenco told the Telegraph. "I skate down that road all the time and was skating well within my limitations."
