Obama August fundraising outpaces Mitt Romney

Things aren't going Mitt Romney's way lately, and new August fundraising figures aren't much comfort.

Reports filed Thursday night by both campaigns show President Barack Obama raked in $84.7 million last month compared to Romney's $66 million, The Hill reported.

Obama ended August with $88.8 million on hand, while the Romney campaign had just $50.4 million. The Romney figure includes $15 million in loans that must be repaid, so he actually entered the month with access to less money, according to National Public Radio.

Romney had been a fundraising juggernaut most of the summer, outpacing Obama in most categories.

But several missteps have plagued the campaign in recent weeks, among them a leaked video from a fundraiser in May in which Romney slams Obama supporters as victims dependent upon the government.

One bright spot for Romney: the Republican National Committee has far more cash on hand than the Democratic National Committee, according to The Huffington Post.

Combined, Romney and the RNC currently hold a $127 million advantage over Obama and the DNC's $96 million.
