Monopoly to replace iron game piece with cat after Internet poll

GlobalPost

Monopoly has been won over by the Internet's cat craze, as an online poll has voted to replaced the game's iron piece with…a kitty.

"I think there were a lot of cat lovers in the world that reached out and voted," Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president for Hasbro gaming marketing, told reporters. "Tokens are always a key part of the Monopoly game … and our fans are very passionate about their tokens."

The month-long Facebook vote was initiated by Hasbro to keep consumers engaged and invested in the classic game's future, the Los Angeles Times reported

The cat earned 31 percent of the vote, beating out other options that included a diamond ring, a toy robot, a guitar, and a helicopter, according to the LA Times

The wheelbarrow and shoe were both on the chopping block along with the iron, but were heavily backed by Ames True Temper and Zappos, respectively, ABC News reported

"I'm sad to see the iron go," Berkowitz said, the Associated Press reported. "Personally, I'm a big fan of the racecar so I'm very relieved it was saved but it is sad to see the iron go."

Hopefully the new cat will get along with the Scottie Dog.
