Mexico vacation tragedy: 2 Massachusetts women drown in Cancun

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – A tropical getaway in Mexico has ended in tragedy for three lifelong friends from Massachusetts.

Two women drowned on Tuesday night after a “rogue wave” swept them out to sea as they walked in shallow water near their Cancun resort, the Associated Press reported Friday.

The bodies of Donna Batta, 53, and Gail Binmore, 54, have been recovered and will be returned to their families in Mansfield, Massachusetts.

The third friend, who was there when the two women disappeared in the waves, has already returned home, NECN reported. She has not been identified.

Fox 25 reported the two women were swimming in the ocean near the Grand Park Royal Hotel when a strong current dragged them out to sea.

According to NECN, conditions in the water were rough because of a recent cold front.

Foul play is not suspected.
