Lena Dunham signs book deal worth more than $3.5 million

Writer, actress and filmmaker Lena Dunham's book was acquired by Random House for more than $3.5 million, according to The New York Times.

The 26-year-old's debut essay collection will be titled, "Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s Learned," and was "hotly pursued" by publishers, said The Times.

A statement from Random House confirmed the acquisition on Monday, saying, "We’re thrilled to welcome Lena to Random House. Her skill on the page as a writer is remarkable—fresh, wise, so assured. She is that rare literary talent that will only grow from strength to strength and we look forward to helping her build a long career as an author," according to The New York Daily News.

The New York Observer said the deal was $3.7 million, citing an anonymous source familiar with the deal.

The Observer said, "The proposal (obtained by The Observer) for Not That Kind of Girl, mocked up to look like a charmingly vintage advice paperback book that one might find in a thrift shop in an Ohio college town, includes sections on losing her virginity, diet, body image, crying at work, death and travel."

In a statement, Dunham said she was "thrilled to be working with and learning from the brilliant minds at Random House, and to be among their incredible roster of authors. I look forward to digging deep with Andy and co. to produce the most thoughtful and personal book I can," according to The Times.

The Los Angeles Times noted that when comedian Tina Fey signed a book deal for $5 million in 2008, she was much further along in her career, with nearly a decade at "Saturday Night Live" and two years of writing, producing and acting in her own show.
