French reporter attacked near Cairo’s Tahrir Square

Another journalist was attacked in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Saturday, continuing the area's trend of violence against female journalists.

France 24 news channel said in a statement that correspondent Sonia Dridi was attacked at 10:30 pm Friday near Tahrir Square while covering a protest. According to the Associated Press, colleagues and anonymous witnesses helped rescued her.

"More frightened than hurt," said Dridi's Twitter page. She tweeted: "Thanks to (at)ashrafkhalil for protecting me in (hash)Tahrir last nite. Mob was pretty intense. thanks to him I escaped from the unleashed hands."

It's not the first time a journalist was assaulted in Tahrir Square.

In November last year French journalist Caroline Sinz was sexually assaulted in Cairo's Tahrir Square.

"We were then attacked by a crowd of men," she said. "I was assaulted by a gang of boys and men who tore off my clothes."

While President Mubarak was still in power, Lara Logan, reporting from Tahrir Square for CBS, was sexually assaulted and beaten. Logan "suffered a brutal and sustained sexual assault," according to CBS.

Last year Reporters Without Borders issued a safety warning to journalists covering Tahrir Square:

"It is more dangerous for a woman than a man to cover the demonstrations in Tahrir Square. That is the reality and the media must face it. It is the first time that there have been repeated sexual assaults against women reporters in the same place. The media must keep this in mind when sending staff there and must take special safety measures."
