Flaming Lips set world record for most shows in 24 hrs

Oklahoma rock band The Flaming Lips have set a new Guinness World Record for the most live concerts played in different cities in 24 hours.

According to Reuters news agency, the group played eight shows in eight different American cities, beginning in Memphis, Tennessee on Wednesday and finishing up at the House of Blues in New Orleans, Louisiana on Thursday.

Fans were able to watch the shows live on the Internet as part of MTV’s O Music Awards. The band broke the record previously held by rapper Jay-Z, who used his private jet to play in seven different US cities in November 2006, travelling from Atlanta to Las Vegas in 24 hours.

Speaking with the BBC from the stage once the new world record had been confirmed, The Flaming Lips’ frontman Wayne Coyne said:

"At five o'clock this morning you thought you were going to crawl in, barely be able to sing and hope you can just survive it.

"But as the day went, everywhere we would go they'd give us energy – now I feel I could go another 24 hours."
