Evangelist Billy Graham hospitalized

The Rev. Billy Graham was admitted to a hospital in North Carolina on Wednesday after suffering from congestion, a cough and a slight fever. He is now awaiting word from doctors on whether the symptoms are from pneumonia, the Associated Press reported.

Graham spent the night in the hospital after taking medical tests Wednesday afternoon and received a visit from his daughter, Gigi, the AP reported. Together they watched television in his hospital room and were able to find a channel playing the well-known Evangelist’s 1973 crusade in St. Louis, the AP reported.

Reports of Graham’s hospital visit came from the North Carolina hospital, which stated Graham was alert, smiling and waving to the staff upon entering the hospital. He was admitted for observation and treatment for the night, the AP reported.

"While no date has been set for discharge, Mr. Graham is looking forward to returning home to spend the upcoming Christmas holidays with his family," the hospital statement said, CNN reported. Graham turned 93 on Nov. 7.

Graham, who is currently at a hospital in Asheville, lives in nearby Montreat and was recently hospitalized in May for successful treatment for pneumonia, CNN reported. This is his fifth hospital stay since 2007, the Boston Herald reported.

As one of the country’s most well-known evangelists, Graham was on a worldwide crusade for the six decades, speaking to sold-out stadiums. He has been counsel to every United States President since Harry Truman, the AP reported.

Graham still remains prominent, with his 30th book, “Nearing Home,” released in October, about old age, the Boston Herald reported. In November, his evangelistic association put all of his sermons online.
