The dog days of summer: Pooches hit the waves for surf dog competition

GlobalPost

The dog days of summer are upon us. The summer heat is here and our four legged friends aren't about to miss out on all the summer fun.

More than 50 dogs, from bichon to bulldog, all gathered along the shore of San Diego for a day of competitive surfing, CNN reported.

Not only was it a fun day for dogs and their owners, but it was also a record setting one. The hang-ten (or is that hang-paw?) dogs won the record for most dogs on a single surfboard with 17.

Other competitions included heats for small and large dogs, as well as tandem rides for man and man's best friend.

For the second year in a row, Abbie Girl won first place in the event. Her owner, Michael Uy explained to SurfToday that the pair was quite literally the underdog going into the competition.

"You know, actually this year I was injured so, a little bit of an underdog coming in, but we do this because we love surfing together in the water. So, it's kind of amazing how all of this has come about, we are very honored."

According to the San Diego Reader, the event was to benefit the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Most participating dogs had been rescued.
