Demi Moore has announced she is divorcing Ashton Kutcher. The film and TV stars married in September 2005.
The couple's relationship became tabloid fodder in recent months as rumors swirled about Kutcher's alleged infidelity.
Moore, 49, told The Associated Press on Thursday of her plan to divorce Kutcher, 33.
A statement read:
"It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I have decided to end my six-year marriage to Ashton. As a woman, a mother and a wife there are certain values and vows that I hold sacred, and it is in this spirit that I have chosen to move forward with my life. This is a trying time for me and my family, and so I would ask for the same compassion and privacy that you would give to anyone going through a similar situation."
Kuthcer reportedly took to Twitter to remark on the split.
"I will forever cherish the time I spent with Demi. Marriage is one of the most difficult things in the world and unfortunately sometimes they fail. Love and Light, AK."
Kutcher also unfollowed Moore on Twitter. She had adopted the handle @mrskutcher.
Kutcher, the 10th most-popular Twitter user with more than 8.2 million followers, earlier this month said he was shutting down his Twitter account after tweeting his support for Joe Paterno, the Penn State coach embroiled in a sex abuse scandal.

The had been dodging reports about Kutcher’s alleged infidelities for months, according to the ABC Celebrities blog.
A claim by 22-year-old Sara Leal claim that she and Kutcher, who took over from Charlie Sheen as the lead in "Two and a Half Men" slept together in September had been widely reported.
The couple reportedly underwent marriage counseling with a Kabbalah counselor in October.
The AP reported that Moore, previously married to Bruce Willis for 13 years and with whom he had three children, said in a 2007 interview with Vanity Fair:
"If somebody would have said, 'OK, here is the prediction: You're going to meet a man 25 years old and he's going to see being with you and having your three kids as a bonus,' I would have said, 'Keep dreaming. I think it caught us both by surprise, and particularly him."
According to the ABC, she first signaled the marriage was in trouble in early September, tweeting a photo of her naked back with the message, "remember…..you’ve got your own back."
Then:
The day before their sixth wedding anniversary, amid reports about Kutcher’s transgressions with Leal, Moore quoted the philosopher Epictetus: "When we are offended at any man’s fault, turn to yourself and study your own failings. Then you will forget your anger."
