Dallas murder suspect steals deputy’s gun, escapes hospital (VIDEO)

The Dallas murder suspect who earlier Tuesday fled a hospital after grabbing a police officer’s gun gave himself up after holding police at bay for two hours.

SWAT teams and negotiators surrounded Franklin B. Davis in a van about a mile from the hospital an hour after the escape, The Associated Press reported.

He fled Parkland Memorial Hospital about 8:30 p.m. There was no information as to why he was in the hospital, The Dallas Morning News reported, although he returned there after complaining of chest pains.

“He didn't have any medical problems that I was aware of,” defense lawyer Phillip Hayes told the Morning News. 

“He's certainly taking a bad situation and right now making it worse. … I don't know if it's just fear or if there’s more to it."

The police officer whose gun Davis allegedly took wasn’t injured. He surrendered to authorities about 11 p.m.

Davis, 30, is accused of raping and murdering high school student Shania Gray, 16, earlier this fall.

Gray was to testify against Davis in a rape case in October.

Police said he created a fake Facebook profile, contacted Gray and arranged to pick her up from school to learn more about the sexual assault trial.

He told police he shot the girl twice before stepping on her neck until she stopped breathing.

Searchers found her body on Sept. 8, two days after she disappeared.

Davis told a Dallas TV station in a jailhouse interview that he was “fighting demons” when Gray died, WFAA reported.

A judge set his bail at $2 million while prosecutors said they would pursue the death penalty.
