Cricketer, Kane Williamson, takes 86 mph ball to crotch

GlobalPost

New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson should be mighty grateful for his athletic cup today.

The small plastic protector — referred to as a "box" in New Zealand — was the only thing that stood between the Black Caps right-hander and mortal catastrophe after he was struck in the crotch by an 86 mph ball by South African paceman Dale Steyn.

And there's video, featuring replays and spot-on dry humor by the commentators.

Play was delayed for a short time. According to the Dominion Post, Williamson waved the shattered piece of equipment toward the dressing room, indicating he'd need a new one.

Williamson, who scrapped a total 102 runs even after being hit by the ball, helped New Zealand draw the third and final test match against South Africa.

The game has been particularly dangerous for cricketers.

South Africa's Hashim Amla was ruled out of the test after a similar incident on the first day, after which he required surgery on his groin, and New Zealand caption Ross Taylor was ruled out after his wrist was broken on day four of the match.
