Republican Chuck Hagel, the former senator from Nebraska nominated by President Barack Obama to be his next secretary of defense, arrived on Capitol Hill this morning to testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee as part of his confirmation hearing.
A Vietnam veteran, Hagel has won two Purple Hearts and served 12 years in the Senate. If appointed, he would be the first Vietnam veteran to serve as the secretary of defense.
