Celebrity hairstylist Vidal Sassoon dies at 84

Famed hairstylist Vidal Sassoon has died of natural causes at his home in Los Angeles, CNN reported today. He was aged 84.

The Daily Mail reported last year that Sassoon, who pioneered wash-and-wear cuts in the 1960s such as the bob and the Five-Point cut, was being treated for leukemia.

Police officers went to Sassoon’s home on Mulholland Drive this morning to confirm his death, according to the BBC.

The celebrity hairdresser opened his first salon in his native London in 1954 and went on to become an international name in hair care, according to the Associated Press.

In 1965, he opened his first salon in New York.

Sassoon’s low-maintenance haircuts revolutionized the craft and liberated women from hot rollers, hairspray and beehives. Actress Mia Farrow, fashion model Twiggy and clothing designer Mary Quant were among his most famous clients. 

“I wanted to eliminate the superfluous and get to the basic angles of cut and shape,” Sassoon said in Craig Teper’s 2010 film, "Vidal Sassoon: The Movie," according to The Telegraph.

Sassoon also developed a popular line of shampoos, styling tools and academies to teach aspiring hairdressers.

Born in Hammersmith in 1928, Sassoon held on to his youthful looks by practicing Pilates and yoga, consuming health drinks and going under the knife, according to The Telegraph.

He was married four times and had four children with his second wife.
