Brazilian police inspector fired for criticizing female officers replaced by woman

SÃO PAULO, Brazil – A Brazilian police inspector fired from his post after criticizing female officers via Twitter has been replaced by a woman.

According to the Associated Press, Inspector Pedro Paulo Pontes Pinho tweeted that he had "14 women under my command and only one has the talent, courage and determination needed for police work."

The tweet appears to have since been removed from his Twitter account, although there are plenty of messages of support referring to the original comment being retweeted by Pinho.

The comment was not well received by the Rio de Janeiro chief of police, who also happens to be a woman, reported Brazil's Veja magazine. Martha Rocha removed Pinho from his position and replaced him with – you guessed it – a woman: Inspector Monique Vidal.

Vidal has already been in charge of five different units and is the inspiration for a female police inspector on Brazil's latest hit novela Salve Jorge.

Rocha said Pinho was replaced because of the comments he made and also because he was "unable to manage the human resources available to him," noted the AP. She also said the civil police internal affairs unit (Coinpol) would look into his use of Twitter during work hours.
