Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb wakes from coma, reports say

Bee Gees singer Robin Gibb has woken from his coma, according to news reports.

The BBC cited spokesman Doug Wright as saying that Gibb was able to nod and communicate with his family.

News reports Friday said Gibb's children, wife Dwina, and brother Barry, had been singing to him, in hopes of waking him from the coma.

In an interview with the Impartial Reporter, Gibb's wife Dwina said that their children have been putting on music for Gibb to "try and bring him back to us."

Gibb, 62, lost consciousness a week ago after contracting pneumonia at a central London hospital earlier this month.

He had been hospitalized for stomach and colon problems, though he has not specified the exact nature of his illness — widely reported to be cancer.

He had told the BBC he had a growth on his colon removed.

His twin brother, Maurice, died in 2003 at age 53 due to complications from a twisted intestine. His younger brother Andy died in 1988 at age 30 of a heart ailment.

According to Reuters, the Bee Gees — started by Robin, Maurice and Barry in Australia — have sold an estimated 200 million records during a career spanning more than 50 years.
