Bahamas: 4 killed in crash of Florida-bound plane

The Associated Press reports that four people died today when their plane crashed in the Bahamas.

Local police said the accident had occurred at the tiny Treasure Cay Airport on Abaco islad, which draws visitors for sailing. Police Superintendent Paul Rolle was cited as saying two men and two women had died in the afternoon but that their names were being withheld until families could be notified.

The AP said a police statement said the deceased were thought to be Americans headed home to South Florida. The plane was bound for Fort Pierce in St. Lucie County. The news agency cited Steve Pedican, a former Treasure Cay chief councilor, as saying the plane had been a single engine Piper and that the airport had seen strong winds today.

Police and civil aviation officials were investigating, according to the AP.

The Bahamas Weekly reported that the plane had crashed into nearby bushes. The Nassau Guardian reported that a resident at the scene had reported that the bodies of the victims, people who owned second homes in the Bahamas, had been burned beyond recognition.

The Palm Beach Post also reported yesterday that a Piper aircraft had crashed into a house on Saturday but that no one had been killed.
